Set Your Heart on What Is Eternal

Scripture: 1 John 2:15

Thought: What you cling to reveals what you value. Letting go may feel like loss, but in God’s hands, surrender is always the beginning of freedom.

Nabo, was a friend’s faithful family pet, who loves for you to throw her ball so she can chase it…. But there is a problem she refuses to let go of her ball. It’s her prized possession—she guards it and will not relinquish it. Now this may seem harmless, even endearing, but her unwillingness to release the ball paints a striking picture of how we often treat the things we treasure most.

God’s Word warns us not to love the things of this world. This isn’t a rejection of joy, beauty, or gratitude—but a call to keep our hearts free from idolatry. When something begins to rival God for our affection, attention, or trust, it becomes a spiritual idol.

Is there something you’re holding onto that’s taking up space only God should fill?

A comfort you won’t surrender?

A dream you refuse to lay down?

A habit or hobby you protect more than your holiness?

This kind of surrender isn’t always one-and-done. Sometimes, I must lay it down daily—or even moment by moment. Letting go takes trust—believing that God truly wants what’s best for me, even when I can’t see it clearly.

Release what cannot satisfy.

God alone is enough.

Journaling Prompt:

What are you holding onto that God may be asking you to release?

Why is it hard to let go?

What might God be offering you in exchange for your surrender?

Prayer:

Father, reveal anything in my life that I’m holding too tightly. Help me to release what I cannot keep, so I can take hold of what truly lasts—You.
