Scripture: Hebrews 6:19

Thought: When storms batter your heart, remember: your stability is not found in your strength but in the One who holds you fast.

Devotional:

Life often feels like a restless sea. Storms come with little warning—financial strain, broken relationships, sudden illness, or overwhelming anxiety. When the winds of uncertainty rage and storms of uncertainty threaten to pull us away—fear, illness, broken relationships, or loss. The question becomes, “What keeps you from drifting?  The answer is found in Hebrews 6:19, we are anchored in Christ.

The writer of Hebrews answers clearly: hope in Christ is the anchor of our souls. Unlike worldly hope, which is fragile and circumstantial, biblical hope is rooted in the unchanging character of God and the finished work of Jesus. An anchor is unseen beneath the surface, yet it secures the vessel above. Likewise, the hope Christ gives is not always visible, but it steadies us from being swept away by fear and despair.

Our anchor is not set in shifting sand, but in the eternal sanctuary—Christ Himself, who has gone before us, interceding at the right hand of the Father (Hebrews 7:25). This hope is not abstract optimism. The text shows that hope itself enters behind the veil. In other words, our hope is not a thing—it is a Person: Jesus Christ. Hebrews 6:20 explains that Jesus, our forerunner, has entered the heavenly throne room on our behalf. Just as the high priest entered the Most Holy Place once a year on Yom Kippur to offer atonement for the sins of the people, Jesus entered once and for all—by His own blood, securing eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12).

Unlike the temporary sacrifices of the Old Covenant, His victory over sin and death secures our permanent access to the presence of God. Before, only the high priest could step behind the veil once a year. Now, through Jesus, the veil is torn, and our hope is firmly anchored in heaven itself.

This means our confidence doesn’t rest on our performance but on His finished work. Our anchor is sure because it is fastened to Christ seated at the right hand of the Father. We do not ask, What is our hope? The better question is, Who is our hope? And the answer is Christ—our eternal Anchor, our High Priest.

Reflection Questions

  1. What storms in your life right now threaten to pull you off course?

  2. Where do you tend to anchor your hope—your own strength, finances, relationships, or Christ?

  3. How does remembering Christ’s role as your High Priest and intercessor strengthen your confidence in God’s promises?

4.     How does understanding that hope is a Person (Jesus) rather than just a feeling deepen your faith?

5.    In what ways do you still live as though the veil is closed, approaching God with fear or hesitation?

6.    How can you remind yourself daily that your hope is anchored in heaven, not in shifting earthly circumstances?

Journaling Prompts

  • Write about a time when you felt tossed by life’s storms. How did Christ anchor you in that season?

  • Reflect on what “firm and secure” hope looks like in your day-to-day walk with God.

  • Finish this sentence in your journal: “When the waves rise, I will hold fast to Christ because…”

·        Reflect on the difference between earthly hopes that fade and the eternal hope Jesus secures.

·       Complete this thought in your journal: Because Jesus entered behind the veil, I can now…

Prayer: Father, thank You that in Jesus I have an anchor that holds, even in the fiercest storms. When my heart is tempted to drift into fear, remind me of the security I have in Christ. Plant my hope not in shifting circumstances but in Your unchanging promises. Teach me to trust that You are already in the sanctuary, interceding for me. May my life reflect a steady faith, pointing others to the Anchor of my soul. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
