Scripture: Luke 5:29-32
Thought: We carry the message of hope in Christ—so let us lead others to the true Physician of souls by loving them deeply and investing in their lives.
Devotional:
Jesus did ministry differently. While most rabbis sought the brightest from the finest families, Jesus chose fishermen, tax collectors, and sinners. He wasn’t interested in tradition or prestige—His love for those in spiritual blindness drove him.
When Levi (Matthew) hosted a banquet, he didn’t invite the religious elite. Instead, he gathered his fellow outcasts to meet Jesus. Why? Because those who are sick need a doctor. And Jesus, the Great Physician, came to heal hearts by calling sinners to repentance.
Notice that Jesus didn’t just call for confession—the mere admission of sin. He called for repentance, a turning of the heart that leads to transformation. This was His mission: not to reinforce empty traditions but to call people into life with God.
The Pharisees missed it. Though they, too, were sick with pride and blindness, they denied their need for healing. Jesus’ words exposed their condition, but instead of running to Him, they rejected His call.
The Spirit-filled church today must not repeat that mistake. We hold the message of hope in Christ. Our mission is not only to gather in worship but to go outward—to the spiritually sick, the overlooked, the ones who have yet to encounter the saving love of Jesus.
Closing Thought: The Spirit-filled church must look outward—because the world desperately needs the hope of Jesus. Levi began with hospitality by inviting those outside the religious community to meet Jesus. The outreach of Christ is ours to carry—love those around you, set the table, and extend the invitation to meet Jesus. It begins with simple hospitality and genuine love.

Reflection Topics:
1. Why do you think Jesus chose disciples that others might have overlooked?
2. What does this passage teach us about the difference between confession and repentance?
3. How can the church today balance inward growth with outward mission?
4. Who in your life is “sitting at the banquet table” in need of meeting Jesus?
Journaling Prompts:
Write about a time when you realized your own need for Jesus’ healing and repentance.
List the names of three people in your life who need the hope of Christ. How can you “set the banquet table” for them?
Reflect on areas in your heart where you may be blind to your need for repentance. What traditions, habits, or attitudes may be hindering you from God’s heart?
How can you live more outwardly focused this week?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Great Physician who heals our brokenness and calls us to repentance. Forgive us for the times we’ve looked inward, guarding tradition, rather than outward to those who need Your hope. Open our eyes to our own need for repentance and give us compassion for the lost around us. May our lives, like Levi’s banquet, create spaces where others can encounter You. Fill us with Your Spirit so that our focus is outward, carrying the message of Your love to a world in desperate need. In Your name, Amen.
